A central activity of the initiative on "Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes" is a series of workshops and conferences.

What started as four workshops has evolved to a series of international conferences which have become a much appreciated meeting place for model developers and interested model users from throughout the entire world.

For all recent conferences (since year 2000) the proceedings are freely available on-line, in so far as the author has given permission to such publication.
The proceedings consist of extended abstracts (max. 5 pages).
Many of the PowerPoint presentations delivered at the conferences are also available.

For Harmonisation workshops and conferences before year 2000, lists of titles and authors of papers presented are available - not the full abstracts. There is a single list of papers presented at the first five meetings (1992 to 1998).

Ever since 1994 full-length versions of selected papers from the conferences have been published in Special issues of the International Journal on Environment and Pollution (IJEP).

The list below provides access to further information about each conference, such as the availability of conference papers in various forms (extended abstract, PowerPoint presentations, and journal papers).

  • First workshop at Risø, Denmark, May 1992. Its title was "Objectives for Next Generation of Practical Short-Range Atmospheric Dispersion Models".
  • 2nd workshop in Manno, Switzerland, August 1993. Its title was "Workshop on Intercomparison of Advanced Practical Short-Range Atmospheric Dispersion Models"
  • 3rd workshop in Mol, Belgium, November 1994. Its title was "Operational Short-Range Atmospheric Dispersion Models for Environmental Impact Assessments in Europe". This was the first conference in the series to have proceedings published in the International Journal of Environment and Pollution (IJEP).
  • 4th workshop in Oostende, Belgium, May 1996. Its title was fourth workshop on "Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes"
  • 5th conference on Rodos, Greece, May 1998. This conference was labelled "Fifth International Conference on Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes", and the naming of subsequent conferences followed that pattern.
  • A small workshop on model evaluation took place in September 1997 in Cambridge, England.
  • 6th conference in Rouen, France, October 1999.
  • 7th conference in Belgirate, Italy, May 2001. Each paper is freely available on-line. The papers are extended abstracts with a typical length of 5 pages. Proceedings from this conference were not published in the IJEP.
  • 8th conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, October 2002. Each paper (extended abstract) is freely available on-line. Some papers have been published in IJEP in a full-length version.

Hint: Search with Google Scholar

If you wish to search for a conference paper from one of the Harmonisation conferences, and you don't know which one, it may pay off to use Google Scholar to search the present site.
Conduct a Google Scholar search on www.harmo.org

The search will result in all papers known by Google Scholar on the site. It will not include the PowerPoint presentations, which are available for many papers. You can later modify the search terms.
