Olesen, H.R., 1994: European Coordinating Activities Concerning Local-Scale Regulatory Models. In: "Air Pollution Modeling and Its Application X", Plenum Press, New York.
Gives an overview of activities, with special emphasis on experiences concerning model evaluation. A central feature is a table indicating difficulties in model evaluation, and possible reactions to them.

Olesen, H.R., 1994: Review of earlier model evaluation work. In: C. Cuvelier (editor): Proceedings of the workshop "Intercomparison of Advanced Practical Short-Range Atmospheric Dispersion Models". August 30- September 3, 1993, (Manno - Switzerland), CSCS (Centro Svizzero di Calcolo Scientifico). Joint Research Centre, European Commission, EUR 15603 EN.
Gives a brief overview, and points to important references. Further, a practical tool is a table on frequently used concentration variables; this table is meant as a framework to ease the interpretation of model evaluation studies.

Olesen, H.R., 1994: Summary of model evaluation discussions in Manno. In: Cuvelier, 1994.
Can be considered a complement to Olesen, 1994a. Includes a more detailed discussion of some difficulties encountered during the work with data sets in Manno.

Olesen, H.R., 1995, Data sets and protocol for model validation. Workshop on Operational Short-range Atmospheric Dispersion Models for Environmental Impact Assessment in Europe, Mol, Belgium, Nov. 1994, Int. J. Environment and Pollution, Vol. 5, Nos. 4-6, 693-701.
Before the workshop in Mol, a so-called Model Validation Kit was distributed to a number of research groups. The Model Validation Kit is a collection of three experimental data sets accompanied by software for model evaluation. The data sets are briefly described, an overview of the components in the model evaluation software is provided, and the main features of the model evaluation protocol are outlined.

Olesen, H.R., 1995, The model validation exercise at Mol. Overview of results. Workshop on Operational Short-range Atmospheric Dispersion Models for Environmental Impact Assessment in Europe, Mol, Belgium, Nov. 1994, Int. J. Environment and Pollution, Vol. 5, Nos. 4-6, pp. 761-784.
Before the workshop in Mol, the Model Validation Kit was distributed to a number of research groups. Five groups returned their results to the author before the workshop. The paper gives an overview of their results and discusses experienced gained through the Mol exercise.

Olesen, H.R., 1996, Toward the establishment of a common framework for model evaluation, in: Air Pollution Modeling and Its Application XI, pp. 519-528. Edited by S-E. Gryning and F. Schiermeier, Plenum Press, New York. The manuscript is available in Acrobat (PDF) format (75 K).
Gives an overview of various activities aimed at establishing a common framework for model evaluation. Further, the paper contain some additions to previous discussions on experiences gained with the Model Validation Kit.

Olesen, H.R., 1997, Pilot study: Extension of the Model Validation Kit. Paper presented at the 4th workshop on Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes, Oostende, Belgium, 6-9 May, 1996. Int. J. Environment and Pollution, Vol. 8, Nos. 3-6, pp. 378-387.
Gives an introduction to data sets from Indianapolis and Bull Run; the Indianapolis data set has later been added to the Model Validation Kit. Also conveys general experiences on the preparation and use of data sets for model evaluation.

Olesen, H.R., 1997, Tools for model evaluation. Paper presented at the 22 NATO/CCMS International Technical Meeting on Air Pollution and Its Application, June 2-6, 1997, Clermont-Ferrand, France. In: Air Pollution Modeling and Its Application XII, pp. 519-528. Edited by S-E. Gryning and N. Chaumerliac, Plenum Press, New York. Abstract and conclusions.
Contains additions to previous overviews of model evaluation activities. Also contains a detailed discussion of one particular problem with the methodology of the Model Validation Kit: observed arcwise maxima are compared directly to modelled concentrations. This type of comparison, however, does not have a straightforward interpretation.

Olesen, H.R., 1998, Local-scale regulatory dispersion models. Initiatives to improve "modelling culture". Proceedings of the 10th Joint Conference on the Applications of Air Pollution Meteorology with the A&WMA. American Meteorological Society, Boston, pp. 49-53.
Contains an updated, but brief, overview of model evaluation activities.

Olesen, H.R., 1998, Model Validation Kit - Status and Outlook. Paper presented at the 5th International Conference on Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purpose in Rhodes, May 1998. Abstract and conclusions. The entire manuscript is available in Acrobat (PDF) format (180 K).
Reviews status for the Model Validation Kit. A change of the methodology of the kit is under consideration, based on the concept of near-centreline concentrations. The paper examines some consequences of such a potential change in methodology.

Olesen, H.R., 1999, 'Model Validation Kit - Recent Developments'. Paper presented at the 6th International Conference on Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes in Rouen, October 1999. The entire manuscript is available in Acrobat (PDF) format (65 K).
Supplements the 1998 paper from Rhodes mentioned above. Certain problems with the determination and use of so-called near-centreline concentrations (NCC’s) are identified and discussed

Olesen, H.R., 2001, 'A Platform for Model Evaluation'. Paper presented at the 7th International Conference on Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes in Belgirate, May 2001. The entire manuscript (extended abstract) is available in Acrobat (PDF) format (65 K).

Olesen, H.R. and J.C. Chang, 2005, 'Consolidating tools for model evaluation'. Paper presented at the 10th international conference on Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes, Sissi, Crete, October 17-20, 2005. The entire manuscript (extended abstract) is available in Acrobat (PDF) format (60 K).
Version 2.0 of the Model Validation Kit became available in October 2005. This paper serves as a key to the new version of Model Validation Kit, while it also outlines some main features of the ASTM-related material available on the Web.

Olesen. H.R. and J.C Chang (2010): ‘Consolidating tools for model evaluation’, Int. J. Environment and Pollution, Vol. 40, Nos. 1/2/3, pp.175–183.
This is a final journal version of the conference paper mentioned above. It describes Version 2.0 of the Model Validation Kit which became available in October 2005, while it also outlines some main features of the ASTM-related material available on the Web.
